Josh Banner—Stay Alive to God Part 1 [Eps 17]
Josh is the host and creator of the Invitation Podcast. He is a certified spiritual director, a retreat leader, and facilitator of contemplative prayer practices in prisons. In part one of this two-part interview, we talk about rediscovering the art of brewing beer, being human, and wakefulness.
How do we live a day well?
“I sensed the Spirit saying to me, ‘You know, just return. Be human. Be alive right now. Trust the things that help you love being alive right now.’”
On crafting beer:
“So for all the years of being in front of people, trying to draw people into a song, it’s incredibly healing to have a craft that is private.”
On deep art:
“The better the art, the more capacity it has to draw us into communion. The deeper the art, the more returns we take to it, the more we come back to it and the more we have the capacity to share the art with others.”
On coming alive to God:
“That’s the purpose of our life: to daily choose whatever allows me to love God more.”
We also delve into the following:
The balance of prayer and art.
A theological anthropology of a farm shaping his imagination.
The patient process of being an artist.
Being both a spiritual being and an earthly creative being.
Ignatius of Loyola and The Prayer of Examen.
Deep art: what Rowans Williams calls “meaning plus” and Scott Cairns notes as “the generative meaning of art.”
